Published tuition tells your family almost nothing. What matters is what people in your income bracket actually pay at that specific school — and what the degree earns afterwards.
What a family in your income range actually pays at each school after grant aid — not the all-families average — broken into cost, grants, your likely contribution, and any gap left over.
Why it matters: The blended average overstates the cost to a lower-income family at a generous college by around six times. Families rule out schools they could have afforded, on a number that was never about them.
